What Makes A Successful Wedding Band

For a long time, live music has always been the go-to when it comes to entertainment. It worked in the early twentieth century and it still does today. However, the invention and development in the technological field has made it harder and harder for bands to work. From weddings to corporate events, more and more people are turning to DJs for entertainment mainly because the latter can provide a wide range of music options and also sometimes serve as MCs as well.

Leadership: The first and most important part of running a successful band is having one or a number of people who are ready and willing to run the band. This means handling bookings or contracts as well as managing the clients. This is important since those are very different aspects (bookings and client management) and if you do not have a person with the necessary charisma to handle this, then the band will surely fail. The leader(s) are also responsible for coming up with the set lists, scheduling rehearsals, dealing with the sound people as well as the bank accounts, taxes among others.

Band members: It goes without saying that your members should be exceptional in their instruments. Apart from this, they also need to be on board with the rehearsal schedule, travelling itinerary etc. If it is about playing at a particular gig, everyone needs to be in agreement. There is no such thing as a part-time band member. For instance, if you have a singer who only wants to sing a set list of songs and is only available on a Saturday, then it is about time you got another one. Having undedicated people is the reason a lot of bands struggle. Always make sure that you have people on hand to substitute in case anything happens. It is not uncommon to get a call on the morning of a certain gig from one of your band members saying they are sick or have an emergency. Gigs are booked months or even years ahead and not showing up will give your band a bad rapport and consequently, no one will want to work with you.

Make sure you are covered for liability. Some venues will make this a requirement before hiring you. If you don't have a policy, you could apply for a single day basis to cover you for the event you are going for but it would be better if you had an annual policy.

Finally, make sure you file your taxes. A band leader needs to run it like a real business because at the end of the day, that is what it is. You can set up and LLC to help things run smoothly. Keep your records and pay your taxes. In this case, a band with a single leader will have an easier time than one with multiple leaders since partnership taxes tend to complicate things sometimes.

With all this being said, it is much easier to know how to keep up in the competitive world of event entertainment and if you follow these simple steps, you will be able to sustain  successful band.
